Simple Gifts: God's Generosity

Last week, I traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi, to spend a week with some of my seminary classmates. The time away was incredibly refreshing for me. We noted that because of COVID, we have lost several opportunities to be together in person, and this week was even more precious due to its rarity. We studied, we discussed theology, we shared many a Zoom screen for our classes, we laughed, we cried, and we celebrated communion. The simplicity of this time away, nary a theme park in sight, carried profound beauty to me. When I recognized the gift of friendship this week, I was so thankful to God.

I spent some time praising God for God’s generosity. My life is abundant because I have been blessed beyond measure with God’s love and care for me. When I look at all the beauty in this world and all the ways that God offers me grace, I realize I have more than enough. Instead of holding on tightly to my time and resources, I can relinquish my grasp and allow God’s hand to guide mine. And I have noticed a funny thing: the more I give, the less I want. It’s an odd paradox.

I am so inspired by the generosity that characterizes Suntree UMC. I believe this is a community that practices generosity as a spiritual discipline. When we asked for people to donate gift cards or cook for Family Promise next week, that need was met enthusiastically! Our church agreed that our super fun Trunk or Treat event this Saturday can accept diapers and wipes to replenish our foster care closet. And we have Thanksgiving mission baskets coming up just around the corner! It is a joy to be in ministry where the congregation offers such generosity of time, talent, and resources.

Thank you so much, Suntree. Your spirit of love, grace, and generosity continues to astound and inspire me.

In Christ,
