Photo GallerySUMC became involved with SBHFH in the early 1990s. SBHFH completed their first house in 1987. SUMC members and friends worked with and supported numerous churches and civic organizations in the building of many houses throughout the local community. In 1999, in association with the other 10 United Methodist Churches in the Melbourne District, a house was built at 131 Tucker St. SW in Palm Bay for Carolyn Van Hooser and her family. This was the 50th house built by SBHFH and the wall raising service was held on September 11, 1999. Dedication was held on Feb. 13, 2000. The HFH Site coordinator was Mr. Joe Bellardinelli.
The decision was made that SUMC would sponsor a Habitat house. This meant that the church would fully provide the funding and labor to build a house. A wall raising service was held in March 2001 and construction began on a house in the Booker T. Washington neighborhood for Ms Brenda Boykins and family. A dedication services was held on July 1, 2001. Mr. Bill King coordinated several Team Leaders and the HFH Site supervisor was Mr. Bob. In 2003, SUMC again sponsored a house. This was the 100th house built by SBHFH and was located in the Faith Landing Development on Testimony St. A wall raising service was held on Nov. 1, 2003 for the house being built for Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace and family. The dedication service was held on May 9, 2004. Mr. Steve Andersen started as the SUMC Team Leader and the HFH Site Supervisor was Mr. Duane Graf.
In 2004, SUMC sponsored a second house in the Faith Landings Development. This 4 bedroom house, also located on Testimony St., was built for Ms. Gloria Billings and family. A wall raising service was conducted on Dec. 23, 2004 and the Dedication Service was held on April 24, 2005. The SUMC Team Leader was Mr. Rene Rubiella and the HFH Site Supervisor was Mr. Duane Graf.
Our church involvement falls under the Mission umbrella as a community outreach program. A member of the Missions Committee serves as a liaison with HFHBC. A team leader supervises construction and is supported by a church volunteer coordinator and church lunch coordinator. The pastors have historically coordinated the fund raising for houses sponsored by SUMC.
